Free WordPress Theme: Rustic

Looking for a nice textured look for your WordPress website? My new “Rustic” theme will be available soon as a free download. It’s made from old brown paper and wood. I think it has a nice calm feeling like a black and white nature photo. It makes color images pop! I’ll put a download link here when it’s done. Won’t be too long from now…I hope.

UPDATE: Here’s the Download Link.

  1. Hi Patrick,

    thanks for the Rustic WordPress theme, it’s absolutely perfect for a tree surgeon client of mine.
    Keep up the great work.

    Great theme, however there are some suggestions I have to make for a next release (if you plan on improving this one):

    1. There is quite a gap (white space) between the first post on the home-page and the links at the top (home/about) – I thought it may just have been my blog but I noticed it on yours too.
    2. The pictures used are quite heavy in size… header.png, footer.png and page.png are the heaviest – would it be possible to cut the size down slightly further without compromising the quality?

    Thanks again for the great theme.

      Hi Emtunc,
      I made the big space between the menu and the first post to give room for very large menu’s. Large menu’s would overlap the first post because the menu has ‘absolute positioning’. I will try to “close the gap” in the next version with some CSS magic.
      I chose to go with the big graphic files because I wanted to keep as much texture detail as possible. Texture is the main feature of this theme. It was a trade-off. Next version, I’ll lower graphic file sizes by 50% if they still look good.
      Great suggestions. I appreciate the feedback.

      I just submitted an updated version (Rustic 1.1) to I closed the gap by half between the menu links and the first post. Seems to look about right. I got the image sizes down to 50% as promised, and they look just fine. I realized that I didn’t need so much color information when using black/white images!

    Hey Patrick!

    Thanks for using your Background Image from your WordPress Template. I’m posting you the link if my site is done.

    Best regards

    I absolutely love the look of this theme. It has a soothing, old time look and I think it would fit a variety of projects, even looks fantastic without the trees!

  5. James Mason says:

    Love this…just downloaded the rustic without the tree, just want to see if works better for my site. Being an old redneck it seems to fit right in for what I was looking for.
    The only suggestion I would make is maybe having the ability to add another side bar to the right side? Just trying to keep the scrolling down to a minimum to use it more as a standard website instead of a blog. I’m learning how to work with php, but not sure enough of myself yet to try and edit the theme…but I still love the design…appreciate it!!

    • patrickbagby says:

      Hi James,
      Thanks for using the theme. Am I officially a redneck now too? I would consider it an honor. Just made a newer, better version of Rustic. See the post “Rustic WordPress Theme Update”. It takes the hassle out of switching between trees and no-trees, plus it loads faster. I’ll see if I can work in another sidebar next time. Always appreciate the feedback….

    I just installed your theme and I love it! I am really new to wordpress templates etc and I need to know how I can easily remove the text in the header as I manipulated the header photo to graphicly say what I want. I would like the link to remain but the words in the header to disappear. Can you help? I love this template!

    • patrickbagby says:

      Hi Vikki,
      I was working on this for you when I noticed you solved it yourself. I watched the words disappear from your website right before my eyes! Congratulations! If there is still a problem, do the following:
      1. Open the “style.css” file in the “Rustic” theme folder.
      2. Find the “#site-title” selector.
      3. Add this line “text-indent: -2000px;” to the CSS underneath .
      4. Then find the “#site-description” selector.
      5. Add “text-indent: -2000px; ” here also.
      These steps will shift the title and description text way off to the left of the screen. Technically, the text is still there so it will be visible to search engines and text readers for the blind. Hope this helps. Good luck.

      • Victoria says:

        Patrick, thank you!
        I WAS indeed working on it but I still seem to have a problem on respective pages. I am going to mess with it some more and see what happens.
        Thanks again Doll and GREAT theme!!!

    I like your template but have a few questions.

    1. Can I change the fonts?
    2. Can I add a picture?
    3. Can I change the color?

    Thank you!

    • patrickbagby says:

      Hi Shannon,
      Changing the fonts and colors is possible, but would require changing many lines of code. Instead of explaining how to do this, I will include these options in the next update. You will be able to pick your colors and fonts from the admin panel without sifting through the stylesheet, which can be tricky! When you say a picture, do you mean a logo image? I was thinking of including that option too….

      • Josh Keiter says:

        Hey Patrick! Love the template as well. Trying to use it for my bluegrass band’s website. New to WP, but am learning quickly. I like my band’s name (Appalachia) to use the MS Script Bold font that comes with Windows. I like the rounded ‘A’ in the name and would love to be able to change the font and make it bigger in the banner as well as center all the text. I’ll be looking for this update so hopefully you’re working on it for us. Great theme for a bluegrass band for sure. I love it.

        • patrickbagby says:

          Hey Josh,
          Here’s how you can adjust the font in the title. Open the style.css file in the “Rustic” folder. Find the line with “#site-title a”. Add this to the code
          font-family: Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
          font-size: 80px ;
          padding-left: 120px ;

          These are random values just to get you on the right track. Change these values to get the look you want. The padding-left moves the title toward the center. You will probably want to adjust the site description also. It’s the next code down “#site-description”. The “MS Script Bold” font isn’t a normal web font so it won’t work. Check out this webpage for more info

      • Micah says:

        I like the theme very much and will probably use it.
        I was wondering when this new update will be released. Being able to change colours and fonts easily would be great. Please release it soon if possible.
        Additionally I was wondering whether you have the backgrounds in a coloured version. If so can you please send them to me by email – and if you want to it might be nice to also include them in the next option. I think with brown wood and creme/white paper it would look lovely as well.
        Thanks a lot,

        • patrickbagby says:

          I’m working on a new version now. I don’t have any colored backgrounds yet, but I’ll try to include the brown wood and creme/white paper look. I think that would be a nice option!

  8. Micah says:

    Thanks for providing the update to the theme! I really appreciate it.
    You put in some new nice options that make it a lot better.
    Could you do me (and us) one more favour and also offer the coloured options without the trees. That would be very kind.

    • patrickbagby says:

      Thanks Micah. I could do that in the next update. I have to make a whole new set of background images for the colored no-trees options. I’m still curious to see what colors are popular so I can make those first. Which color do you use?

  9. ann says:

    Is it possible to remove the search and box from the header?
    I love your theme -but this option is not needed by me.

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Hi Ann. Currently the search-box is built in (i.e. embedded into the graphics). I will probably make it optional in a future update. It won’t be soon because I just finished the last update. The very first version of Rustic had no options at all! Slowly, I’m building them into the theme in response to user’s (like you!) requests.

      • Ann says:

        Thanks Patrick, I would also like to know if it is possible to NOT show the ‘POST A REPLY’ on certain pages. I ask you to bear with me as I am kinda new at using WP.
        Thanks again.

      • Patrick Bagby says:

        Hi Ann. You can choose to turn comments off on any post or page. Click the “Screen Options” tab in the upper right corner of the WordPress admin. Make sure “Discussion” is checked. Now look down near the bottom of the admin page for “Discussion” panel. Make sure both “Allow comments” and “Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this page” boxes are unchecked. Now the “Leave a Reply” will be gone!

  10. Michelle says:

    I love the Rustic theme but am having difficulty figuring out how to update the footer and the automatic links. Each page I add will automatically put a hyperlink at the top of the page and in the footer. I only want links on the side bar. I am new to Word Press and cannot figure out how to even locate the html code to correct this. Is there an easy solution?

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Hi Michelle. Yes, there is an easy solution. Open the style.css file and put this code in the bottom. It will make the menus disappear!
      #little-menu ul, #access {

      Add this code too if you want to nudge the posts up to fill the gap.
      #header {

  11. Jimbob says:

    I really like your theme, and have customized the images nicely. However, when I try to do the standard child theme trick to override some of the css, I get PHP errors. Do you have any hints for overriding without altering your code?

    Warning: require_once(/home/benbrx/public_html/wp-content/themes/rus-child/theme-options.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/benbrx/public_html/wp-content/themes/rustic/functions.php on line 33

    Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/benbrx/public_html/wp-content/themes/rus-child/theme-options.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/benbrx/public_html/wp-content/themes/rustic/functions.php on line 33

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Hi Jimbob. I found the problem. Open functions.php and go to line 33. Change get_stylesheet_directory() to get_template_directory() . Now WordPress will look for the file in the Rustic folder instead of your child theme folder.

  12. I am brand new to WordPress and am so far impressed. Most of the free themes I looked at seemed to be just a rehash of others, yours stuck out as unique. This theme is absolutely perfect for my Family genealogy (The rustic tree motif fits in perfect).

    I have 2 questions.

    1. Can I add a content copyright above your info in the footer? I would also like to get rid of the powered by WordPress, but can live with it. (I am not getting rid of your link)

    2. Is it possible to get just the image of the tree so I can make pdf documents with my “Twisted Tree logo” and an image.

    Awesome job (Wish you had a theme for a Architectural design firm)

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Hi Bill. When I first looked through all the wordpress themes, I had a hard time finding one to fit my website Then I found “Floral Belle” theme by Nicki Faulk. It was perfect. It’s great to have others say the same about Rustic. Adding a content copyright is fine, and I’ll put a link here soon to the image. What format is best for you (pdf, png, jpeg etc.) ?

  13. I’m just looking for a normal size. I can reduce if needed. Thanks again
