Customize Your Rustic Website!

One problem with using a WordPress theme is your website will look similar to other websites using the same theme. The answer…? Customize! That’s what Tom from Sundance Cabin Rentals did. He wanted a banner with his logo, phone number, and some background scenery. He said he was going to stay with the Rustic theme (it does have a log cabin look!), so we chose to customize the whole header instead. I made four banner styles (winter, spring, summer, fall) , and four radio buttons to change them whenever he likes. Now Sundance Cabin Rentals has it’s own unique design that sets it apart from other websites that use the Rustic theme. Plus it makes the whole website look more professional and custom made!

    Thanks for that…Done

    Patrick that plugin “Post Types Order” can that be used for portfolio? I tried it and it re-ordered everything just not the pics in the portfolio? In the portfolio items list i changed the pics around but nothing seems to be registering. Am i missing something?

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Sounds like your doing it right. I checked the plugin with Rustic, and it worked. Not sure what’s happening there. Might try clearing the cache.

      • Donna says:

        Hey, I rechecked(found) the settings and one of the boxes(auto) wasn’t checked. The plugin doesnt show settings under it, just had activate/edit. Problem solvered…:)
        Portfolio;
        Patrick is it possible to move the 12345 pages(with some code) up under the search box/ top right of page…if not no drama.
        Oh and is it just me or do my numbers look like they are diff sizes?

        • Patrick Bagby says:

          Hi Donna, that’s great. Sometimes it takes a little time to get to know a new plugin. It’s best to have the numbers on the bottom so they don’t get in the way of the layout. I noticed the different number sizes too. That’s just a quirk of the font. Different fonts have there own sizes and shapes. Your website looks pretty good, bye-the-way.

          • Donna says:

            Thanks Patrick,
            It’s getting there…
            Another Q if i may..Porfolio;
            Example; if i “read more” there is an option to the right to go to next pic. Is that suppose to open up the next pic OR do those options just keep taking you through all the “text/read more’s”?(Thats what mine is doing)
            Plus do you know anywhere, website, that i can look at, to see what it looks like to open/enlarge photos on page rather than in box. I dont want to change anything unless i like it. Then its wasting your time as well as mine.
            Thanks so much for your help with all this.

          • Patrick Bagby says:

            Hi Donna. Those links appear as a convenient way to read the next ( or previous ) post, which means the content rather than the pic. That’s something you’ll see on all wordpress websites. Rustic Portfolios are built around using the lightbox to view images, but wordpress has it’s own Native WordPress Gallery. It makes thumbnail images that when clicked show the pic on an attachment page. I think it’s not as nice as the lightbox. Here’s a link that explains more about the Native WordPress Gallery.

  2. Donna says:

    Hey Patrick, checked out the pic thing and i think i’ll leave it as it is. Looks better.
    Another Q; On the right of every page there are either “boxes(portfolio)” OR “check boxes(Pages)” for Tags;
    Q. 1; Because i turned off the side bar can i still add tags?
    Q. 2; In the link below, what if anything do i “check”?

    Thanks

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Hi Donna. I see that you are using only pages on your website. If you decide to include a blog page in your website, then the tag and category links will appear below the posts. To include a blog page go to Settings->Reading. There you can choose a page to show your posts (blog page). You might first make a blank page called something like “Latest News”, then make it your blog page.

      • Donna says:

        Pardon my ignorance but what is the diff between a blog page and a home page?

        • Patrick Bagby says:

          That’s OK.

          The Homepage is the main webpage on your site. WordPress shows posts on the homepage by default. You can change this from Settings->Reading. Blog page is just another name for whatever page shows your Posts, listed one after another. Right now your website uses a Page for the Homepage, and has no Blog page.

  3. Brad says:

    Patrick,

    I’m a rancher, artist (oil paintings) and a complete newbie to blogs. However, I have a project that I’m trying to get started as a means to share photos, poetry, short stories, my artwork, and anything else related to preserving Florida’s cattle heritage. Your rustic theme looks like it would be a great fit for my subject matter, but my hangup is that I’d like to use the dark brown wood coloring without the trees and there is no option for this. I don’t know enough – nor do I have the time or inclination to learn it at this point – about writing code to work around this. I’ve got a couple of ideas envisioned: a) lose the trees and have an option to replace the tree in the upper right corner with my own image while leaving the title and tagline intact; b) lose the trees and have an option to replace with my own image in the entire header area but retaining the title and tagline visible over the image – basically have the image as a background in the header; and/or c) have the option to keep delete all trees on the page (not just in the header) yet retain their space/placeholder with the option to use my own images. The first two ideas would allow customization of the header area only while the third idea would allow me to custom tailor the appearance of my entire page(s). Can you help me out with this and if so, how much would it cost? Thanks for the feedback and a great looking theme!

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      I’d like to help you customize Rustic with some of your artwork. Send me a few pics that you want to use and I’ll put something together. Just make a donation to my Paypal account if you like it when it’s done. I could replace the trees with ranch scenes. I will probably make them a subtle black and white so they blend into the background, setting the mood without drawing too much attention away from your artwork. Do you like this idea?

      • Brad says:

        Sounds like a great idea to me… I’ll select a few of my favorite photo images – probably more than necessary so that you can have options to play with – and then send them over to you. Thanks again for the quick replies, it’s been a pleasure!

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Got those customizations done for you. I think it looks pretty sharp! Those images you sent worked out well. You’ll see the new option for “Florida’s Cattle Heritage” which contains the new style. First you’ll have to switch to some theme other than Rustic. Then delete Rustic. After that, upload the new version. Good Luck and I hope you like it. Here’s the link.

      • Brad says:

        Outstanding custom work, Patrick! Your initial theme was great but this new option for my page couldn’t have turned out better!! I greatly appreciate your efforts and will gladly click on your donation link.

        • Patrick Bagby says:

          Thanks Brad. Glad you like it. Just looked at your paintings on facebook. Very beautiful! There’s a magical quality to them. So vivid. Those palms sprouting up and out of the open landscape toward masses of cumulus clouds is surreal and strangely familiar. It’s a part of Florida I have never seen. Excellent work.

  4. Micael says:

    Hi,

    I have tried to do this – change the header picture.
    However, it gets misplaced… to far down and to far to the right…
    I actually used the referred site above and their picture “fall.jpg” as a template so it’s the right size and all…
    Any idea why?

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      If you post a link to your webpage I’ll have a look.

      • Micael says:

        Okay, it’s currently in maintenance mode. I’ll take it out of that in a few minutes. Please reply to my e-mail when you’re done looking at it. :)

        • Patrick Bagby says:

          Hi Micael. I took a look at your website. You made a background image (which is very nice by-the-way) and are trying to use the logo image utility to put it in place. This won’t work because logo images are smaller images placed on top of the background image. So first undue the logo image, then open style-no-trees.css file and paste this code in at the bottom of the page:
          #wrapper {
          background-image: url("http://arekoren.se/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/kor7_mod_header.png");
          }

          That should do the trick!

  5. Patrick,
    We love your theme, thanks for putting it together. There are two modifications we are trying to make in the header and running into trouble. We are using a child theme of Rustic, and are editing the CSS of the style sheet to change the header image. We created a new header image based off the original.
    Using the code you gave to other commenters, we added
    #wrapper {
    background: url(images/att/images/page-att2.png);
    }
    except we put our image link.
    However, we were only able to get the new header image on the pages that were “default templete” and not on “one column, no sidebar”.

    The other issue was that our final header image, while the same H and W as the original, was off by 5-10 pixles, as obvious as to where the body paper connects to the header paper.

    Any help would be great!
    Cheers,
    Nick and Laina

  6. Patrick,
    After lots of deductive reasoning, I discovered that “single column, no sidebar” pages do not have a wrapper, but instead I altered the code to #header. That also seemed to clear up the connection to the paper problem! Thanks anyways!

  7. Jim says:

    Hello Patrick – Love this theme! Have been creating sites for awhile now, but this is only my 2nd attempt at a WP Site. This theme is perfect for my client and I have added an ecommerce plug-in. A couple questions, if you don’t mind:
    1) How can I get their logo up in the header of the home page, and incorporate the image I call ‘bottletrio’ onto the rustic ‘torn’ page instead of on the ‘lined paper’ above it (?) and
    2) having a little trouble attaching ‘products’ to a specific page..

    Apologies to you and all the pro’s out there for the ‘newbie’ questions!

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      There’s a utility on Appearance->Rustic Theme Options for putting a logo image in the header. Are you trying to put the “bottletrio” image in the header too? The products page can be controlled from Appearance->Menus.

  8. Jim says:

    Thanks Patrick – I would love to include the logo image alongside the name of the company – it seems as though when I put the logo up, the name text disappears.
    thanks again

  9. Jim says:

    thanks for your help Patrick

  10. Jim says:

    Hello Patrick – New question today.
    Where would I find the parameters to set the banner at the top of the page, as opposed to constantly adjusting the size of the artwork until it fits?
    thanks as always
    Jim

  11. Jim says:

    Yes – i guess it’s the same situation as Micael earlier where you gave him a new ‘wrapper’ command line… would i use the same thing except for the name of my image?
    thanks

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Can you post a link to the image you want to use? That will give me a better idea of how to help. Micael made a new background image, not a logo image, so it’s still unclear.

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      Looks like a good logo image. First get the image into your media library, and make it your logo-image. Then open style.css and put this code in at the very bottom.
      #branding {
      left: 90px;
      top:40px;
      }

      That will make it sit right on every page.

  12. Jim says:

    I will give that a go… just one more rookie question: Is there something I need to do in particular to set it as the ‘Logo Image’ ?
    thx again

  13. Jim says:

    awesome Patrick ….
    Last request – what would the optimum size be for a logo image?

    • Patrick Bagby says:

      It depends on the image and personal preference. Just make sure it doesn’t overlap the menu or hide other graphics like the tree or the rough paper edge. You might want to soften the edge of your logo image with a program like photoshop to blend it into the background. Then adjust that code I gave you to position it just right. Good Luck.

  14. Jim says:

    can’t thank you enough for all your help Patrick! Cheers!
